De Novo Podcast: The Story of Edgar Chocoy-Guzman
"Jeffrey uses his boundless creativity and talent to illustrate complex social issues with the retelling of poignant stories of real people.”
Jeanne Pepper and Jeffrey Solomon outside the PeppTalks studios January 20, 2025.
Jeffrey Solomon is a theater artist and human rights advocate who co-founded the Houses on the Moon Theater Company, where he writes and directs plays. His works include Building Houses on the Moon, De Novo Podcast, and Tara's Crossing. He adapted his documentary play DE NOVO into an audio drama that is featured on the Houses on the Moon podcast, available wherever you get your podcasts. Jeffrey also served as director, producer and editor.
Jeffrey has taught storytelling workshops and directed projects like TRANSformation and gUN Country, exploring themes of gender identity and gun violence. His solo play MotherSON has been produced internationally and used in educational programs. He's also a Moth Grand Slam Champion and wrote Jim Henson's CityKids, an Emmy-nominated children's special. Solomon holds an MFA in Creative Writing.
Jeffrey reached out to me as a fan of our show and the #Blaze it Forward movement. I was interested to learn more about Jeffrey who is using his skill in the theater to reach a broad audience and bring immigration issues and real human stories to the public and writes educational material targeted at high school students. One thing I have learned from my work in preventing “hate” and false narratives is to bring people in proximity to the people and situations they distrust and where they are constantly bombarded in the media with confusing narratives they can’t understand. I myself was caught up in the immigration situation in Southern California after two car accidents, one in which I nearly lost my life, with undocumented and uninsured motorists. Driving in Orange County and Los Angeles will never be the same for me after experiencing PTSD from a near death experience and having a real fear of another accident with someone that drives unsafely and/or illegally through our cities with no real financial liability. This is just scraping the surface of the issues caused by penalizing undocumented immigrants, who cannot get proper driver training or insurance. It’s a negative feedback loop.
After listening to Jeffrey’s work on the De Novo Podcast - I found myself in a front row seat to the drama and tragedy of 16year old Edgar Chocoy-Guzman who for survival fled Guatemala at age 14. I have deep empathy for anyone fleeing their country of origin for purposes of survival and I pray that we make legal immigration into this country faster, easier and safer. No sixteen year old should be locked in detention for illegal immigration in the U.S. when they will be dead on arrival in their county of origin. I challenge anyone who questions immigration reform in the United States to listen to the De Novo podcast and consider the narratives of the people who are caught up in our immigration system or threatened by new laws and agendas since our last presidential election in 2024.

Men Alive: Orange County Gay Men’s Chorus
"Kindness has a home with these two people that find purpose in spreading joy, creating great memories and making people happy”
Mike Auchter
Volunteer Board Chairman of OC Gay Men’s Chorus
Mike Auchter brings a unique blend of leadership and creativity to his role as Board Chairman of MenAlive, Orange County’s Gay Men’s Chorus. A retired manufacturing engineer with a 32-year career in the automotive industry, Mike’s last role was Chief Engineer for a global automotive component supplier. Vocal music has been a lifelong passion for Mike. From performing Gregorian Chant in high school to singing with the University of Michigan Men’s Glee Club, he discovered the power and camaraderie of male voice choruses. This passion led him to co-found Measure for Measure, a community male chorus in Michigan, where he served as its first president and business manager, growing the group from 18 to 60 members—a legacy that thrives 37 years later.
Since joining MenAlive in 2018, Mike has been instrumental in supporting its mission to create a chosen family and safe space for its members, build bridges and bring joy, all while fostering artistic excellence. Under his leadership as chairman since 2020, MenAlive has expanded its outreach and charitable efforts alongside its celebrated musical and theatrical productions.
Retired since 2018, Mike resides in Irvine, California with his husband Alan and their dog Oliver. He volunteers at the LGBTQ Center of Orange County and continues to embrace his love of music, community, and travel.
Valerie Ousley
Executive Director of OC Gay Men’s Chorus
Valerie (she/her/hers) has been an integral part of MenAlive since 2005, starting as Costume Manager and later serving in various leadership roles, including Backstage Manager, Governance Director, Chorus Manager, Vice President of the Board of Directors, and most recently, Executive Director. Her deep passion for music and equality has fueled her dedication to the organization, which she considers her extended family. With her son Brandon now joining the baritone section, that family connection has become even more personal.
Before stepping into her role as Executive Director full-time, Valerie spent 25 years as a business owner, specializing in early childhood education. She resides in Orange County with her supportive husband, Kevin, a drummer who shares her love for music. Together, they have three children, three grandsons, and a high-maintenance cat who rules their household.
As a singer herself, Valerie brings a lifelong love of performance and an unwavering can-do attitude to everything she does. With authenticity, dedication, and enthusiasm, she continues to champion MenAlive’s mission of building bridges, advocating for inclusivity, and inspiring the Orange County community.

Terra Newell
Podcaster and Crime Victims’ Advocate
“Terra Newell: More Than Just "Dirty John." She is a modern day David, who conquered a Goliath and proved that size and physical strength alone are not enough to defeat a real hero.”
Terra Newell is a prominent advocate for victims of domestic violence and exploitation of crime victims, whose story gained national attention through the popular "Dirty John" podcast and subsequent TV series. While her life was tragically impacted by her mother's abusive relationship with con man John Meehan, Terra has transformed her experience into a powerful platform for positive change. Beyond her advocacy work, Terra has also leveraged her voice and experiences to create and host the podcasts "Terra's Baddy Club" and "Survivor Squad," where she shares her insights on personal growth, healing, and empowerment. Additionally, she has ventured into the world of education, teaching aspiring podcasters and currently working on a documentary project. Terra's journey is one of remarkable resilience and strength. In 2016, she courageously defended herself against a violent attack by Meehan, a harrowing event that serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of domestic abuse. This incident, while deeply traumatic, has also become a catalyst for her advocacy work and a testament to her unwavering spirit.
