Episode 221
Kanan Durham
Executive Director, Pride at the Pier
“the price for authenticity and equal rights is never to high””
Our Interview of Kanan was totally fun and greatly educational on the issues related to homophobia and the political action in Orange County taken by concerned citizens, allies and local LGBTQAI+ to fight the pride flag ban in Huntington Beach, California in 2023. Huntington Beach is not the first city to try this; the city of Irvine was successful under the leadership of Mayor Christina Shea in 2019, but in 2020 Shea was the only dissenting vote when the council voted to fly the rainbow flag. LA TIMES: Irvine approves flying the pride flag, Mayor Christina Shea only dissenting vote. Pride at the Pier got its start over the course of multiple meetings in February and March of 2023, when the Huntington Beach City enacted a ban on Pride Flags being displayed by the city government in any capacity. In response, a small group of people, including Kanan, worked together to organize a reactionary Pride event in HB on May 21st, 2023, the city’s first. They raised funds to create the largest homemade Progress Pride flag in California (33' x 24'!) and marched to the end of the pier to display it there for over an hour.Kanan diplomatically explains what being a “trans-man” means and how he lives his best life now since his transition. He is the executive director of Pride at the Pier.
Since then, Pride at the Pier expanded from a reactionary event to become something greater and more collective. The founders realized on that day that the need for collective action and connection in the queer community was greater than was being met.
Their non-partisan mission at Pride at the Pier is to educate, connect, and empower the LGBTQ community to get involved involved in local politics and civic systems. There’s close to 4 million people living and working in Orange County, and according to the last U.S. Census, over 385,000 of are LGBTQ - and yet it doesn’t feel that way. Pride at the Pier is working to build a future where LGBTQ folks aren’t political prey, but a voting block.
Kanan also talked about his journey as a trans-man and how his life has changed with authenticity and acitivism. Thank you Kanan for your activism and joining us at Pepptalks for a great interview!

Tahera Christy
CEO & Founder of AmourPropre®️ Beauty Brand
Author, Singer, Actress
“An intuitive friend to all with an open heart, entrepreneurial spirit and positivity swirling around her as she dances through her vibrant life.”
Tahera Rene Christy
I first met Tahera at a “Blaze it Forward” event in Foothill Ranch when she came to support our family during a cleanup at the memorial park there. I was immediately interested in this self styled lifestyle “guru” who sings, writes books, raises kids, does public speaking, podcasts and finds time to run her health and wellness business. Tahera is an energetic mother of four and married to her high school sweetheart. She talks about her life and what brought her from her home in Oakland, California to Mission Viejo, California. Her company, Amour Propre, which means“Self-Love”in French, is a wellness and beauty brand centered in self-love, enhanced by science, inspired by nature and fueled by positive energy. She was inspired to create Amour Propre because she saw the decline of kindness and connectivity in society. She believes that if society is to come together, we must rediscover the art of loving our neighbors as ourselves. Out of a radical self-love movement can come a powerful community kindness initiative.
Tahera is a sought out and renowned life coach and relationship expert. She is the host of a popular podcast called, Filter Free with Tahera Rene Christy. Available on Spotify, Apple iTunes, Amazon Music, Soundcloud and YouTube. She talks about various topics and centers them around relationships with self, family, friends and business. Tahera's self-published and released her debut album, Just Let Me in 2019, featuring 14 self-written, produced and sang by her and her team of musicians (Amazon).
She developed her love for entertainment and her desire to motivate people towards success while attending a performing arts high school. Tahera received her degrees in Communication and Music from the California State University in Long Beach, where she emphasized the study of Rhetoric and Vocal Jazz. Tahera is an accomplished entrepreneur, author, singer, songwriter, actress, model, comedian, and emcee. You may recognize her from various television shows, TV commercials, movies, and local events. De Novo Podcast: The Story of Edgar Chocoy-Guzman
"Jeffrey uses his boundless creativity and talent to illustrate complex social issues with the retelling of poignant stories of real people.”
Jeanne Pepper and Jeffrey Solomon outside the PeppTalks studios January 20, 2025.
Jeffrey Solomon is a theater artist and human rights advocate who co-founded the Houses on the Moon Theater Company, where he writes and directs plays. His works include Building Houses on the Moon, De Novo Podcast, and Tara's Crossing. He adapted his documentary play DE NOVO into an audio drama that is featured on the Houses on the Moon podcast, available wherever you get your podcasts. Jeffrey also served as director, producer and editor.
Jeffrey has taught storytelling workshops and directed projects like TRANSformation and gUN Country, exploring themes of gender identity and gun violence. His solo play MotherSON has been produced internationally and used in educational programs. He's also a Moth Grand Slam Champion and wrote Jim Henson's CityKids, an Emmy-nominated children's special. Solomon holds an MFA in Creative Writing.
Jeffrey reached out to me as a fan of our show and the #Blaze it Forward movement. I was interested to learn more about Jeffrey who is using his skill in the theater to reach a broad audience and bring immigration issues and real human stories to the public and writes educational material targeted at high school students. One thing I have learned from my work in preventing “hate” and false narratives is to bring people in proximity to the people and situations they distrust and where they are constantly bombarded in the media with confusing narratives they can’t understand. I myself was caught up in the immigration situation in Southern California after two car accidents, one in which I nearly lost my life, with undocumented and uninsured motorists. Driving in Orange County and Los Angeles will never be the same for me after experiencing PTSD from a near death experience and having a real fear of another accident with someone that drives unsafely and/or illegally through our cities with no real financial liability. This is just scraping the surface of the issues caused by penalizing undocumented immigrants, who cannot get proper driver training or insurance. It’s a negative feedback loop.
After listening to Jeffrey’s work on the De Novo Podcast - I found myself in a front row seat to the drama and tragedy of 16year old Edgar Chocoy-Guzman who for survival fled Guatemala at age 14. I have deep empathy for anyone fleeing their country of origin for purposes of survival and I pray that we make legal immigration into this country faster, easier and safer. No sixteen year old should be locked in detention for illegal immigration in the U.S. when they will be dead on arrival in their county of origin. I challenge anyone who questions immigration reform in the United States to listen to the De Novo podcast and consider the narratives of the people who are caught up in our immigration system or threatened by new laws and agendas since our last presidential election in 2024.

Since joining MenAlive in 2018, Mike has been instrumental in supporting its mission to create a chosen family and safe space for its members, build bridges and bring joy, all while fostering artistic excellence. Valerie (she/her/hers) has been an integral part of MenAlive since 2005, starting as Costume Manager and later serving in various leadership roles, including Backstage Manager, Governance Director, Chorus Manager, Vice President of the Board of Directors, and most recently, Executive Director. Her deep passion for music and equality has fueled her dedication to the organization, which she considers her extended family. With her son Brandon now joining the baritone section, that family connection has become even more personal.
Before stepping into her role as Executive Director full-time, Valerie spent 25 years as a business owner, specializing in early childhood education. She resides in Orange County with her supportive husband, Kevin, a drummer who shares her love for music. Together, they have three children, three grandsons, and a high-maintenance cat who rules their household.
As a singer herself, Valerie brings a lifelong love of performance and an unwavering can-do attitude to everything she does. With authenticity, dedication, and enthusiasm, she continues to champion MenAlive’s mission of building bridges, advocating for inclusivity, and inspiring the Orange County community.

Radiance Healing Journey
Live Event
This week we wanted to share something different for the week of giving thanks. In cooperation with the amazing women in the Radiance community, we invited a eclectic group of people (our fans) to share an afternoon under the setting sun together in Orange County, California. We enjoyed some yoga and meditation together. Then we joined in a discussion of the healing journeys of our special guests. Finally, we ended this incredible afternoon with a sound bath sending us all off feeling fantastic.

As the youngest child in a family of lawyers— both of his parents were attorneys and all four of his siblings are attorneys—you could say that his passion for the law is “in his blood.” Mr. Weinberg’s law practice is devoted solely to criminal defense. He believes that all individuals accused of a crime are entitled to a fair and competent defense.
William Weinberg, Esq.
Criminal Defense Attorney
Attorney William M. Weinberg was born and raised in Orange County. As the youngest child in a family of seven lawyers— both of his parents were attorneys and all four of his siblings are attorneys—you could say that his passion for the law is “in his blood.” Mr. Weinberg’s law practice is devoted solely to criminal defense. He believes that all individuals accused of a crime are entitled to a fair and competent defense. Learn from William “Bill” Weinberg about his passion for helping people and for giving back to his community. While Bill has never represented a victim in a criminal prosecution - he took a tremendous professional risk - when he offered to help the Bernstein family navigate seven long years of the criminal prosecution of the man that killed their son Blaze. Bill discusses his philosophy and the case against Blaze’s killer. It was truly a remarkable gift to have William there with us in court and the Bernstein family will always hold a special place in their hearts for him.
